Technology Professional Services Association Announces Groundbreaking Research on PS Project Performance

New Study Uncovers the Complex Drivers of PS Project Profitability

SAN DIEGO, Mar. 05, 2008 – The Technology Professional Services Association (TPSA) announced the release of an unprecedented study on project performance in technology professional services. The research establishes a comprehensive new set of benchmarks for how PS organizations are executing around project management and project metrics.

Based largely on an analysis of 135 actual PS projects across 39 project metrics, the study also provides key insights related to the project management policies and practices of the study respondents. The study yields a truly unparalleled view of PS project performance in general and a particularly rich understanding of the drivers of project financial performance.

The policies and practices part of the study reveals that solid execution around project performance metrics remains a rare capability in professional services, with many TPS organizations tracking only the bare minimum of metrics and fewer still employing project metrics to truly drive and change the business. The actual project data analysis indicates that project performance and profitability differ significantly as a function of factors like customer type, pricing structure, project type, and whether projects involve the use of subcontracted resources or centralized solution centers.

“Because project profitability is a central driver of PS financial performance, the need for true, PS-specific, industry project performance data is extremely high,” said Bo Di Muccio, Ph.D., senior director, research and advisory services, TPSA. “Having solid industry data on project performance is an indispensable tool for TPS organizations. We believe that this study represents an especially significant illustration of how incredibly valuable industry benchmark data can be for TPS organizations.”
